Specifying the right flexible spill barrier requires understanding floor conditions, containment volume requirements, and the geometry of the deployment zone.
Where Flexibility Actually Matters
Equipment rooms with floor-mounted conduit, generator pads with anchor bolts, dispensing stations with hoses crossing the floor, mechanical rooms with floor drains in irregular positions — all of these defeat rigid barriers. A rigid berm leaves gaps at every obstacle; an absorbent sock can be shaped but only once. A Bend-N-Seal bends around obstacles, reseats against the floor at every contact point, and stays sealed under operating conditions.
Adhesion: A Clean Floor Is Required
The tacky base is the mechanism that keeps the barrier in place. Dust, loose debris, grease film, or residual chemical contamination all reduce adhesion. Sweep or vacuum the deployment path before laying the barrier; on heavily contaminated floors, wipe with a degreaser first and let dry. On polished concrete and sealed epoxy floors, adhesion is excellent and reseats cleanly through hundreds of cycles. On porous unsealed concrete or rough textured surfaces, the barrier still works but lifespan shortens.
Connecting Multiple Sections
Two 10-foot sections butt together end-to-end to make a 20-foot run, but the seam is the weakest point. Overlap sections by 2–3 inches and press the join firmly against the floor. For perimeters that wrap a corner, miter-cut the barrier ends at 45 degrees with a sharp blade and overlap at the corner. The urethane cuts cleanly with a utility knife on a backing surface.
Profile Selection: Slim vs. Taller
The 1.5-inch slim profile is for threshold dams, low-volume containment, walkway barriers where pedestrian step-over needs to stay easy, and daily-traffic applications. The 2.4-inch taller profile holds significantly more fluid per linear foot before overtopping and is the right pick for primary perimeter use, doorway dams with higher floor flow rates, or applications where headroom is not an issue.
Cleaning and Reuse
After a deployment, peel the barrier slowly from one end — the tacky base comes off cleanly when lifted gradually. Wash with mild detergent and warm water; aggressive solvents will degrade the urethane and shorten reuse life. Dry fully, roll loosely (don't fold tightly), and store flat in a clean environment out of direct sunlight. With proper care, expect dozens to hundreds of deployment cycles before tack degrades.
Where Bend-N-Seal Is Not the Right Tool
- Vehicle drive-over containment — use L-bracket spill berms instead.
- Static drum or equipment containment — use spill containment pallets or spill berms.
- Large-volume spill containment — step up to a foam-wall berm with taller sidewalls.
- Aggressive solvent exposure — urethane degrades on ketones and halogenated solvents; specify chemical-resistant containment.
Chemical Compatibility
Urethane Bend-N-Seal barriers handle petroleum products, water, glycol coolants, mild acids and bases, and most lubricants. Not recommended for prolonged contact with concentrated aromatic or chlorinated solvents.
