Absorbent Pads

Pads built for the fluid you're actually working with

Absorbent pads come in four types matched to fluid chemistry: universal (gray, oil and water), oil-only (white, hydrophobic), chemical hazmat (yellow, aggressive chemistry), and barrel-top (22″ diameter for 55-gallon drum tops). The right pad depends on what's leaking, where it's leaking, and who has to clean it up.

  • Universal absorbent pads — gray, 15″×20″, absorbs both oil and water. The default workhorse for indoor maintenance, machine shops, fleet bays, and any setting where the spill could be water, coolant, or hydrocarbon.
  • Oil-only absorbent pads — white, hydrophobic. Repels water, absorbs only hydrocarbons. Marine bilges, stormwater drains, outdoor fuel handling.
  • Chemical hazmat absorbent pads — yellow, chemically inert binder. For acids, caustics, oxidizers, and unknown chemistries. Hazmat response and chemical processing facilities.
  • Barrel top absorbent pads — 22″ diameter, pre-cut for 55-gallon drum tops with bung holes. Drip control on drums under active dispense or transfer.

How to pick the right pad

Three questions narrow the choice quickly. What's the fluid? Petroleum, mixed, or aggressive chemistry maps to oil-only, universal, or chemical pads. Where is the pad deployed? Indoor maintenance suggests universal; outdoor or marine suggests oil-only; lab and chemical processing suggests chemical hazmat. How long stays the pad deployed? Short-cycle wipe-downs use 2mm standard weight; staged response uses 3mm heavy.

Not sure which fits? Order the free absorbent pad sample box and test the materials against your specific fluid before committing to a case or pallet order. Call 888-774-5528 for bulk pricing across multiple SKUs.

A Procurement Guide to Absorbent Pads for Industrial Facilities

Sorbent pad selection comes down to three independent decisions: fluid type (most important), weight class (2mm standard vs. 3mm heavy), and format (pad vs. roll vs. pillow). This guide covers each.

When Universal Pads Are Not Enough

Universals handle the chemistries you see in normal industrial maintenance — petroleum products, coolants, lubricants, water, mild detergents, light solvents. They will degrade or fail on concentrated acids, strong bases, oxidizers, halogenated solvents, and reactive chemistries. For any of those, specify chemical hazmat pads regardless of cost difference — the wrong pad on a chemical release becomes part of the incident.

When to Switch to Oil-Only

If water contact is possible — outdoor settings, rain-exposed areas, marine work, stormwater drains — universal pads will saturate with water before they reach the oil they were meant to absorb. Oil-only pads are hydrophobic and float, picking up only the hydrocarbon layer. Cost per pad is similar; the difference is application-specific.

Pads vs. Mat Rolls vs. Pillows

Sizing Pack Quantity

For maintenance areas, a 200-pack of 2mm standard universals usually lasts a month at typical drip-control burn rate. For response kits, stock at least one 100-pack of 3mm heavy weight. For chemical processing areas, keep a 100-pack of chemical hazmat pads near every transfer point, restocked monthly.

Compliance Map

Universal pads cover OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22 walking-working surfaces and the residual cleanup phase of an EPA SPCC plan (40 CFR Part 112). Oil-only pads cover USCG 33 CFR 154/155 for marine response. Chemical hazmat pads cover OSHA HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120) requirements. Most facilities need at least two of the three.

Stocking Strategy

Small facility (single building, mixed maintenance, no chemical handling): one 200-pack of universal 2mm standard plus one 100-pack of 3mm heavy covers most situations. Add outdoor fuel storage: oil-only 100-packs at each fueling point. Chemical processing: hazmat 100-packs at every transfer location. Drum handling: barrel top pads for each drum under active dispense.

Disposal Across Pad Types

The pad itself is non-hazardous polypropylene. Once saturated, the pad inherits the hazard classification of the absorbed fluid. A pad full of non-hazardous lubricant goes to industrial waste; a pad saturated with a listed RCRA waste is hazardous and must be manifested.

Bulk and Recurring Orders

Most facilities settle into a recurring monthly or quarterly order across multiple pad SKUs. We support standing POs with locked pricing and scheduled shipment dates. Call 888-774-5528 or use the contact page with your SKU mix, quantities, and shipping cadence for a configured quote.

Frequently Asked Questions About Absorbent Pads

Absorbent Pads — Frequently Asked Questions

What types of absorbent pads do you stock?

Four types matched to fluid chemistry: universal pads (gray, absorbs oil and water both), oil-only pads (white, hydrophobic, absorbs only hydrocarbons), chemical hazmat pads (yellow, chemically inert for acids, caustics, and aggressive chemistry), and barrel-top pads (22" diameter, pre-cut for 55-gallon drum tops).

How do I choose the right absorbent pad?

Three questions narrow it down. Short-cycle wipe-downs use 2mm standard weight; staged response or long-duration absorption uses 3mm heavy.

What's the difference between universal, oil-only, and chemical pads?

Universal pads have a surface treatment that lets them absorb both water and oil. Oil-only pads are untreated hydrophobic polypropylene that repels water and picks up only hydrocarbons. Chemical hazmat pads use a chemically inert binder that holds up against acids, bases, oxidizers, and aggressive solvents that would degrade a polypropylene-based pad.

What size and weight options are available?

Most pads are 15" wide x 20" long, the industry standard. Two weight classes: 2mm standard for routine maintenance (lighter, lower cost per pad) and 3mm heavy for sustained leaks, response kits, and drag/wring use (roughly double capacity per pad). Pack sizes are typically 100 (heavy weight) or 200 (standard weight) per dispenser box. Barrel-top pads are 22" diameter with bung-hole cutouts.

Can I get a sample before ordering in bulk?

Yes. The free absorbent pad sample box includes universal and oil-only samples for testing against your specific fluid. For chemical hazmat pad samples, call 888-774-5528 with the chemistry you'll be testing against and we'll send a single-SKU sample.

How much fluid does an absorbent pad hold?

A 2mm standard 15"x20" pad absorbs about 0.19 gallons each (~38 gallons per 200-pack). A 3mm heavy version of the same pad holds roughly double per pad. Stated capacities are laboratory maximums; in real use, plan on 60–75% of that based on viscosity, temperature, and handling.

Do absorbent pads work for hazardous chemical spills?

Standard polypropylene pads (universal and oil-only) are not rated for concentrated acids, strong bases, oxidizers, or aggressive solvents. For those, use chemical hazmat pads with a chemically inert binder. Using the wrong sorbent on a regulated chemical release creates a worse incident than the original spill.

How are used absorbent pads disposed of?

The pad itself is non-hazardous. Once saturated, it inherits the hazard classification of whatever it absorbed. A pad full of non-hazardous lubricant goes to industrial waste; a pad saturated with a listed RCRA waste is hazardous and must be manifested. The Spill Control Resource Center covers waste documentation.

Do you offer bulk pricing and recurring orders?

Yes. Multi-pack orders qualify for volume pricing, and combined orders across pad types unlock additional tier discounts. We support standing POs with locked pricing and scheduled monthly or quarterly shipments. Call 888-774-5528 or use the contact page with your SKU mix and cadence.

How fast do orders ship?

Stocked sizes ship same-day from our Solon, Ohio warehouse on orders placed before the daily cutoff. Larger pallet orders ship LTL freight with transit confirmed on quote. See the shipping page for current free-shipping thresholds.
