The oil and gas industry operates under some of the strictest environmental regulations in the United States. The EPA's Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) rule—codified in 40 CFR Part 112—mandates secondary containment, spill response equipment, and written prevention plans for any facility with aboveground oil storage capacity exceeding 1,320 gallons. Offshore and pipeline operators face additional regulatory layers from BSEE, PHMSA, and state environmental agencies.
Beyond federal regulations, the financial and reputational cost of an uncontrolled fuel or oil spill can be catastrophic. The average onshore crude oil spill cleanup costs between $15,000 and $50,000 per barrel spilled, not counting fines, litigation, or remediation. Proactive spill containment is always the more cost-effective choice.
Our spill containment products for oil and gas include oil-only absorbents that repel water while aggressively absorbing petroleum products, heavy-duty containment berms rated for vehicle drive-over, large-format IBC spill pallets for bulk crude and chemical storage, and rapid-deployment spill kits for field response. Every product is in-stock and ships within 1–2 business days.
Fuel & Crude Oil Spills
Wellhead leaks, pipeline ruptures, and tank overfills require immediate secondary containment. Hydrophobic oil-only absorbents and drive-over berms are the front-line defense for petroleum spills in the field.
Hydraulic Fluid Leaks
Drilling rigs, completion equipment, and pipeline pumping stations rely on high-pressure hydraulic systems that are prone to seal failures and hose ruptures. Containment berms and absorbent mats beneath equipment catch leaks before they reach soil or water.
Environmental Compliance (SPCC)
SPCC plans require documented secondary containment systems, regular inspection records, and on-site spill response equipment. Our products help you check every box on your SPCC compliance checklist.
Large-Volume Spill Response
Tank farm leaks, loading rack overfills, and pipeline incidents can release thousands of gallons. L-berms, modular berm kits, and high-capacity IBC pallets provide containment at the scale oil & gas operations require.
Produced Water Containment
Produced water associated with oil extraction is classified as a hazardous fluid in many states. Proper secondary containment for produced water storage tanks and transfer points is essential for regulatory compliance.
Refinery & Terminal Operations
Refineries and terminals require comprehensive secondary containment across loading areas, tank farms, pump stations, and maintenance bays. Our IBC pallets, drum containment systems, and industrial-grade absorbents are built for these demanding environments.
Recommended Products for Oil & Gas Operations
These products are stocked specifically for oil and gas applications. Oil-only absorbents are hydrophobic—they absorb petroleum while repelling water, so they perform in rain and outdoor conditions. Containment berms are rated for heavy equipment drive-over. All spill pallets meet SPCC secondary containment requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions — Oil & Gas Spill Containment
What does SPCC compliance require for secondary containment?
Under EPA 40 CFR Part 112, SPCC plans require secondary containment sufficient to hold the volume of the largest single container plus freeboard for precipitation. For a 275-gallon tank, that means at least 275 gallons of containment capacity (plus 10% margin is standard). Containment must be impermeable, structurally sound, and regularly inspected. Our IBC pallets, tank sumps, and L-berms are engineered to meet these specifications.
What is the difference between oil-only and universal absorbents?
Oil-only absorbents (white) are hydrophobic—they absorb petroleum products while actively repelling water. This makes them ideal for outdoor use, surface water applications, and any situation where you need to absorb oil without also picking up rainwater. Universal absorbents (gray) absorb oils, water, coolants, and solvents but will also absorb water. For oil & gas field operations, oil-only products are almost always the better choice.
How do I size a spill berm for a tank battery?
The berm must be sized to contain 110% of the largest single tank in the battery, or 10% of the total capacity—whichever is greater. For a battery with 1 × 400-barrel tank and 2 × 200-barrel tanks (800 bbl total), the berm must hold at least 440 barrels (110% of the largest). Our team can help you calculate berm dimensions and select the right modular or rigid berm system for your specific tank configuration.
Can containment berms handle vehicle traffic?
Our L-bracket berm systems and drive-over foam-wall berms are engineered to allow vehicle entry and exit without compromising containment integrity. The foam-wall design springs upright automatically after a vehicle passes over it, maintaining continuous containment. These are specifically popular at wellhead pads and tank batteries where service trucks frequently enter and exit the containment zone.
What spill response equipment is required at a wellsite?
At a minimum, your SPCC plan should specify on-site spill kits with oil-only absorbent pads, booms for surface water protection, disposal bags, and PPE. Many operators also keep overpack salvage drums for transferring leaking containers, drain plugs for any floor or ground-level drain openings, and portable berms for emergency area containment. Quantities should match your tier level under SPCC guidance.
How do absorbent booms work for oil spill containment?
Absorbent booms are cylindrical sorbent tubes that float on water and are deployed around an oil spill to both ring-contain the slick and actively absorb the petroleum product. They link together end-to-end to form any required boom length. Our oil-only booms repel water while absorbing hydrocarbons, so they remain effective even in rainfall and moving water conditions.
Do you offer products rated for outdoor UV and weather exposure?
Yes. Our HDPE spill pallets and poly tank sumps are UV-stabilized for long-term outdoor use. PVC containment berms are also rated for outdoor environments. Absorbent products should be stored in weatherproof containers or spill kit bags when deployed outdoors. We recommend our tarp covers for any pallets stored at outdoor wellsites or tank batteries.
What is a modular spill berm and when should I use one?
A modular spill berm kit consists of interlocking straight sections, corners, and a floor liner that assemble into a custom-sized containment perimeter without permanent installation. They're ideal for wellsites, staging areas, and any location where a permanent concrete berm isn't feasible or cost-effective. The 30-foot kit from our modular berm collection sets up in under an hour.
